Newcastle United produced a commanding display to claim a memorable Champions League win over José Mourinho’s Benfica, powered by standout performances from Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon.
Gordon opened the scoring midway through the first half, timing his run perfectly to slot home Jacob Murphy’s low cross at the back post. It marked his fourth goal in just three European outings, setting the tone for a confident performance from Eddie Howe’s side.
After the break, Newcastle doubled their advantage in direct fashion. Goalkeeper Nick Pope launched a huge throw down the right flank, catching the Benfica defence off guard. Antonio Silva failed to read the bounce, allowing Barnes to burst through and finish off the inside of the post.
Barnes wasn’t done yet — he sealed the victory late on, combining neatly with Gordon before slotting the ball through Anatoliy Trubin’s legs to make it 3-0.
Benfica had their chances but couldn’t make them count. Dodi Lukebakio was twice denied — first by a sharp Pope save at the near post, then by the woodwork after a curling effort from range.
The result gives Newcastle consecutive Champions League victories for the first time since 2003, underlining their growing confidence on Europe’s biggest stage.
