England manager Sarina Wiegman has revealed she was hoping to include Millie Bright in her squad for this month’s friendly fixtures before the Chelsea captain announced her retirement from international football.
Bright, who made 88 appearances for the Lionesses and captained the side during the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, confirmed her decision to retire on Monday.
Speaking after the news, Wiegman said she had planned to call up the 32-year-old defender for England’s upcoming matches but fully respected her choice to step away.
“Of course I wanted her to be part of the squad,” Wiegman said. “She’s still an outstanding player, but I completely understand her decision. She thought deeply about it, and after such an incredible international career, it wouldn’t be right to try to convince her otherwise.”
Wiegman revealed the two had already discussed the possibility of retirement shortly after the Euro 2022 triumph, when Bright hinted she might soon call time on her England career.
Bright played a vital role under Wiegman, starting every match at Euro 2022 alongside Leah Williamson in central defence and leading the team in Williamson’s absence at the World Cup the following year.
The England boss suggested that the demanding football calendar likely contributed to Bright’s decision to step back from international duty.
“I loved working with her — she’s been an incredible leader on and off the pitch,” Wiegman told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I’m so grateful for everything we achieved together. Those memories will always be special. We’ll definitely miss her.”
Wiegman added that Bright remains a key figure at Chelsea and still has plenty to offer at club level.
“It’s a brave decision to know when it’s time,” she said. “She’s still having a big impact at Chelsea, and she’s certainly not finished yet.”
England will continue their preparations for the 2027 Women’s World Cup with two friendly matches later this month — facing Brazil at the Etihad Stadium on 25 October and Australia at Pride Park on 28 October.
