Southampton have confirmed the return of experienced midfielder Oriol Romeu, who has rejoined the club on a short-term contract until the end of the season.
The 33-year-old Spaniard, a familiar face to Saints supporters, brings a wealth of experience and leadership back to St Mary’s as the club continues its push for promotion. Romeu previously spent seven successful seasons with Southampton between 2015 and 2022, establishing himself as a key figure in the heart of midfield before moving to Girona.
His return is seen as a major boost to manager Russell Martin’s squad, adding much-needed depth and composure in midfield. Known for his tactical intelligence, strong defensive positioning, and ability to control the tempo of matches, Romeu’s presence is expected to bring balance and stability to the team during the final stages of the campaign.
Speaking after completing the deal, the club expressed delight at welcoming him back:
“Oriol knows the club inside out and understands the values we stand for. His professionalism and leadership qualities will be invaluable both on and off the pitch as we head into an important part of the season,” said a club statement.
Romeu himself also shared his excitement about returning to familiar surroundings, expressing his determination to contribute positively to the team’s ambitions:
“Southampton has always felt like home to me. I’m really happy to be back and ready to give everything to help the club finish the season strongly.”
With his vast Premier League and Championship experience, Romeu’s addition could prove pivotal as Southampton aim to secure a successful conclusion to their campaign.
