Chelsea’s midfield powerhouse Moisés Caicedo continues to draw admiration from both his manager Enzo Maresca and teammate Robert Sánchez, with both men describing the Ecuadorian as among the finest in world football.
Caicedo joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2023 for a record-breaking £115 million, making him, at the time, the most expensive player in Premier League history. While that record has since been surpassed, his performances this season are proving that the club’s heavy investment is paying off.
Following Chelsea’s 1–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Maresca expressed his appreciation for Caicedo’s growing influence on the pitch.
“Moi is showing his true quality,” Maresca said. “He’s exceptional — not only for his footballing ability but also for his attitude. He’s humble, works hard for his teammates, and gives everything for the team. In my opinion, he and Rodri are the two best defensive midfielders in the world right now.”
Maresca’s comparison carries weight, having previously coached Rodri during his time on Manchester City’s staff. With the Spanish international struggling with fitness over the past year, some might even argue that Caicedo’s consistency has placed him ahead in current form.
Caicedo’s focus on the game has remained unwavering despite off-field speculation about his representation and potential transfers. His maturity has impressed both the management and his teammates.
Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, who also played alongside Caicedo at Brighton, echoed his manager’s admiration.
“He’s unbelievable,” Sánchez said. “Every challenge, every duel — he wins them. He’s strong, calm, and reads the game like few others. For me, he’s the best in the world in his position.”
With performances like these, it’s no surprise that Caicedo is being recognized as one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders — a player whose blend of physicality, intelligence, and humility makes him vital to Chelsea’s ambitions this season.
