Ireland Defender Megan Campbell Announces Retirement from Football

Republic of Ireland international Megan Campbell has officially announced her retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable career spanning over a decade.

The 32-year-old defender, known for her trademark long throw-ins and versatility across the backline, last played for London City Lionesses, leaving the club at the end of last season following their promotion to the Women’s Super League.

Campbell earned 57 caps for Ireland after making her senior debut in 2011 against Switzerland and was part of the squad that helped secure qualification for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, although injury ruled her out of the tournament.

During her club career, the Drogheda-born player represented several top English sides, including Manchester City, Liverpool, and Everton. While at City, she lifted a domestic treble, and later played a key role in Liverpool’s promotion back to the WSL in 2022.

Her long-throw ability became a signature weapon throughout her career — a skill that earned her a Guinness World Record for the longest throw-in by a female footballer, measuring 37.55 metres.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Campbell reflected on the emotional challenge of stepping away from the game.

“It’s been something I’ve struggled to accept for quite a while,” she wrote. “I always knew this day would come, but I never wanted to believe it would arrive so soon.”

She described representing her country as the proudest moment of her life.

“Playing for Ireland was the greatest honour for me and my family. I’ll cherish every memory, every night we shared, and every friend I’ve made through football,” she added.

Campbell expressed gratitude to everyone who supported her throughout her career, saying she feels fortunate to have spent so many years playing the sport she loves.
